Leadership is one of the most valued characteristics nowadays for professional positions as well as for university graduate profiles. From the perspective of academic leadership, its essence transcends beyond the role played by a position within the university educational dynamics and becomes an essential factor for development and innovation in the university community. This article analyzes the importance of leadership exercised by students and teachers, both in face-to-face and virtual environments, highlighting how technology expands the possibilities of projection of academic leadership in learning and research processes. It is based on the vision of various authors on the approach to leadership from traditional conceptions that are closer to the business world and other positions that arise from the vision of this attribute and its application to the educational field.
