Abstract

The Fifth Industrial Revolution, known as Industry 5.0, represents a paradigm shift that combines advanced technology with a human-centric approach, prioritizing sustainability and organizational resilience. This paper examines how intelligent organizations, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Costa Rica, can adapt to this new context through three key trends projected for 2026:
1. The integration of smart technologies aimed at energy efficiency and circular economy,
2. Digital humanization fosters workforce well-being and human-machine collaboration.
3. Electric mobility and decarbonization across the value chain.
Costa Rica, with a renewable energy matrix exceeding 89% and public policies focused on sustainability, provides a favorable environment for implementing these trends. However, SMEs face challenges related to technological investment, workforce training, and sustainable process integration. This article proposes a practical approach for Costa Rican SMEs to not only survive, but thrive in the era of Industry 5.0.
